If you like to be active on holiday or are looking for a more relaxed time then the west coast has so much to offer for both young and old, the spectacular scenery around the coast and inland to the mountains and glens is second to none with activities to cater for all tastes keeping everyone very happy. See our links for information on cycling, kayaking, walking and hillwalking, diving, visiting the various nearby islands, the historic castles and buildings and generally messing about on the land and water. Don't forget to take your camera as the scenery is truly spectacular.
As you come over the bridge you enter Clachan Seil, a rambling settlement on the picturesque shore of Clachan Sound. A mile or so down the road is Balvicar, your holiday destination and geographically the centre of the island. West from here across the central ridge of the island the road takes you to pretty conservation village of Ellenabeich, with views across to Mull and Easdale Island. To the South of Balvicar lies the settlement of North Cuan, the ferry terminus for the five minute crossing to the Isle of Luing.
The island is a mix of fishing, farming and the natural landscape. In Spring and Summer flowers bloom wherever you look. Wildlife is everywhere; buzzards can be seen circling over the low hills behind Balvicar, herons stalk the shallows in the bay and you may even be lucky enough to see a white tailed sea eagle soaring over the cliffs at Ellenabeich. Otters are frequent visitors to the the island shores as well.
The sheltered waters round the island are popular with canoeists and sailors, while the countryside offers a variety of walks to suit everyone from the most energetic to the casual stroller. There is a nine hole golf course on your doorstep, while the island shop is a short walk from your holiday cottage. Please see the 'things to do' page for more island information.
